Tadalafil (Cialis) is a medication that's used to treat erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is when a man has trouble getting or keeping an erection when aroused. It's part of a class of medications called phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors. Other meds in this class include Sildenafil.

Tadalafil overview

If you've have issues with erectile dysfunction, you should know about Tadalafil (Cialis) and whether or not it's right for you. Tadalafil is the generic version of Cialis.

Erectile dysfunction is when a man has trouble getting or keeping an erection when aroused. Tadalafil (Cialis) works to maintain the erection after arousal. But it doesn't work unless sexual arousal is achieved.

Tadalafil (Cialis) is also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and pulmonary arterial hypertension. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate.

Tadalafil proper use

Use Tadalafil (Cialis) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Under no circumstance should you take more than recommended. By doing so, you increase your chances of side effects. Read the patient instructions in detail that come with your prescription of Tadalafil (Cialis).

Swallow the tablet whole. It's important to remember not to split, break, chew, or crush it. Your ability to have sexual activity may be improved for up to 36 hours after taking the tablet.

This medication may be taken with or without food. Only use the brand of this medication that your doctor prescribed to you. Different brands may interact differently with medications you're already taking.

Store your Tadalafil (Cialis) in a closed container at room temperature. Keep your medication stored away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Don't freeze.

Dosage

Your doctor prescribes a specific dose tailored to your needs. Be sure to follow their directions for when to take Tadalafil (Cialis) and how often.

Your prescription varies based on the strength of your dose, how much you can take in a day, and how often you can take it.

Tadalafil (Cialis) is usually taken as needed, with 10mg as a single dose. Take it 30 minutes before sexual activity. Only take Tadalafil (Cialis) once a day, and ask your doctor to adjust your dose as needed.

Mechanism of action

When a man is aroused, their nerves send chemical signals to the blood vessels in their penis. Blood vessels in the penis open up which allow blood to fill them.

At the same time, veins close. Pressure then traps the blood within the Corpora Cavernosa. This causes the penis to expand and become erect.

When a man has erectile dysfunction, the blood vessels are failing to open up properly. Tadalafil (Cialis) works by relaxing the muscles of the blood vessels and increases blood flow to the penis. This causes the penis to become erect.

When an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type-5 acts too quickly, it causes a man's erection to become difficult to sustain. Tadalafil (Cialis) helps control this enzyme to help maintain an erection.

Drug interactions

Some drug combinations are safe to take together. However, it's important to check with your doctor about any possible drug interactions before taking Tadalafil (Cialis). Don't take Tadalafil (Cialis) before checking your current medications with your doctor.
