While Viagra (Sildenafil) is commonly associated with men, research was done to see how it impacts women. The results of various studies have shown that women can reap the benefits of the drug, too. Women taking Viagra (Sildenafil) reported feeling increased satisfaction and greater genital sensation during sexual intercourse.

How does Viagra (Sildenafil) work?

Viagra (Sildenafil) is an FDA-approved PDE5 inhibitor. It works by stimulating an enzyme in the body that created cyclic guanosine monophosphate. These enzymes smooths muscle cells and relaxes arteries in the penis, causing them to dilate.

For men, this causes blood flow to the penis to increase. Erectile tissue fills with blood, and a man who ordinarily has erectile dysfunction can achieve and maintain an erection.

While Viagra (Sildenafil) helps with maintaining an erection, it doesn't mean a man gets one automatically. Sexual stimulation and arousal must still be present.

Does Viagra (Sildenafil) increase arousal in women?

The Urology Department at the University of California, Los Angeles conducted a study in 2003 to examine the effects of Viagra (Sildenafil) on women. The study used post-menopausal women who suffered from female sexual arousal disorder (FSAD).

Through the study, researchers discovered that women benefited in several ways:

  • Increased satisfaction during sexual intercourse and stimulation
  • Greater genital sensation during intercourse

Another study found that 42 percent of women who took Viagra (Sildenafil) had greater satisfaction during sex. This is compared to only 28 percent of women who reported an improvement using only a placebo.

Similarly, 57 percent of women who took Viagra (Sildenafil) reported enhanced sensation in their genital region during sex. This is a marked improvement over just 44 percent of women who stated the same thing while on the placebo.

The medication seemed to work best in women with arousal problems. Results were less conclusive with women who had arousal issues combined with problems having sexual desire with their partners.

Can it work for all women?

Viagra (Sildenafil) doesn't increase desire in men. It only works for men who have desire but have issues maintaining an erection. A similar phenomenon seems to be at place with women.

Researchers found that women who may benefit the most from taking Viagra (Sildenafil) are those with normal hormone levels in good relationships. It can help women who used to enjoy sex but no longer feel that same satisfaction.

It's vital to note that the FDA has not approved use of Viagra (Sildenafil) for women with low libido. Women should speak with their doctors first before taking Viagra (Sildenafil). Different medication may be necessary.

What are some common side effects?

Other drugs have been approved by the FDA to treat low libido in women. While these drugs have been labeled as "female Viagra (Sildenafil)," that's not entirely accurate.

Viagra (Sildenafil) seeks to treat a physical problem (maintaining an erection). Other medications specifically designed for women seek to increase the desire for sex.

Women should be careful about taking Viagra (Sildenafil). In the studies conducted, certain side effects were identified.

  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Rhinitis
  • Flushing
